Meet the Owner: Auntie's Soul Food and More

Melissa Brown likes being in charge of her own business.

After just a couple years in the kitchen of Ladies of the Sea & Soul on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Melissa Brown is branching out and doing her own thing in Seminole Heights. With a life long love of cooking in her heart and a staff plucked from her own family tree, Brown is setting out on her first restaurant venture on Hillsborough Avenue, in a prime location nestled directly across from the infamous Taco Bus. "I like this location, I think we'll do well here," Brown said. "My mom lives in this neighborhood and now I do too. It's a nice area and it just happened to work out that I found this spot. This used to be a grocery store, but I just stopped in while they were doing construction and decided to take it." Auntie's Soul Food and …

Michelle Brooks opened her Seminole Heights market last Friday.

Michelle Brooks has a smile on her face and in her heart. The 50-year old Seminole Heights resident and former district manager for Starbucks is keeping herself busy these days with the creation of a neighborhood market that fits the Seminole Heights ideal and attracts locals both for shopping and socializing. "I'm glad to have the chance to create this store because it gives me a way to interact with people," Brooks said. "A neighbor and friend came by today, they brought me Mexican food and grabbed a beer and sat down to have lunch with me. That made my day." Meet the Owner: San Carlos Tavern

Juan Carlos Londoño loves Seminole Heights and hopes to see more locals coming into his bar.

Having moved to America from Colombia at the age of 21, Juan Carlos Londoño has worked hard to build something for himself in the land of opportunity. Londoño, 40, would eventually grow tired of the cold weather in Philadelphia where he first moved from his homeland and decided to sell his pizza parlor to make his way to Tampa in 2001. He started a small bar called Recuerdos (50 person capacity) near Dale Mabry and Waters, but eventually felt the need to move and saw an opportunity in Seminole Heights. "The bar we had before was too small, the number we did were beyond what we could handle in that building so we started to look around," Londoño said. "It's not easy to find something where you can get a full liquor license but we saw a lot …

Meet the Owner: Fly-By-Night

A local screen printer has been in the business of perfection for the last 12 years and loves every second of it.

Steve Sproul is only in the screen printing business because he likes it. The 64-year old Georgia native is semi-retired, having left half billion dollar textile giant Slant twelve years ago after his job as Director of Credit became too stressful. He moved to Tampa with his wife Jean and purchased Fly-By-Night Specialty Imprints from a local who had run the business for more than 40 years. "Doing this creates a unique environment for me," Sproul said. "The rewarding parts of owning a business is still there, it's just more challenging in this economy. We've been able to get through it, but we'd like to get bigger. At least I'm not out there looking for a job." The Fly-By-Night name is now more than 50 years old and Sproul runs it with a …

Meet the Owner: Mama's Southern Soul Food

Patch caught up with a local business owner and pastor to learn more about his brand of soul food.

Evonn Reaves got into the restaurant business for one reason, and as a pastor he won't lie about it. "Money," says Reaves with a laugh when asked what his favorite thing about owning the business is. "I needed a good steady income and this was a good start. It has ended up being fruitful and I enjoy what I do. There really isn't anywhere else around this neighborhood where you can get soul food like this so we're doing well." Mama's Southern Soul Food on Tampa Street is only two years old, but it has the loyal customer base of a long time establishment. With a menu consisting of all the southern soul food classics, Reaves has found a market in need of some good home cooking. Mama's Southern Soul Food 3919 Tampa St. (813) 223-4106 …

Meet the Owners: S.E. Mattis at the Heights Barber Shop

A new Seminole Heights business offers a revised spin on the classic barber shop.

Editor's note: Meet the Owner is a regular Patch feature spotlighting Seminole Heights' small business owners. Want to be featured next or have a business to recommend? Post a comment below or email us at seminoleheights@patch.com. The spiraling barber pole at 6500 N. Florida Ave. is certainly a tip-off. But don't assume S.E. Mattis at the Heights Barber Shop is part of the classical barbershop revival of recent years. Yes, co-owners Scott Mattis and Chris Copeland provide only the essential barbershop services: Cuts, shampoos and straight razor shaves. And yes, nostalgia is their décor theme. But did your grandfather's barbershop have album covers from Duran Duran, Heaven 17 and Journey on the walls? Call it Seminole Heights eclectic — a …
