Update: Council to Reconvene in November on Salem's Sub Shop

Residents in Old Seminole Heights are opposed to the business heading to their neck of the woods.

Last week, we reported on a Salem's Gyro's & Subs that plans to move into Old Seminole Heights. Residents concerned about noise and an increase in crime rates circulated a petition that garnered 120 signatures and attended a Tampa City Council meeting on Thursday where the sub shop's owner hoped to receive clearance to build a drive-through at the business on Nebraska Avenue. Lori Kay, who attended the council meeting and lives in Old Seminole Heights, said the owner has yet to receive permission to build the drive-through from city officials. Even so, Kay said the owner agreed to two of the residents conditions - a six-foot wall to muffle noise and a raised directional curb to direct traffic away from the neighborhood - but hasn't budged …

Robin, the problem with the hours restrictions you recommend is that it would require a new law or a zoning change to the entire area. There are no hours restrictions for general business hours that I am aware of. Starbucks and the Taco Bus are open 24 hours, for example. When a Planned Development (PD) zoning type is requested (this is a customized zoning type) you can add in these sorts of …   more ›

Meet the Owner: Auntie's Soul Food & More

Melissa Brown opened her restaurant in August.

A painted family tree adorns one wall of Auntie's Soul Food & More, complete with framed photos of owner Melissa Brown's family members. But the photos of her smiling nieces and nephews are only part of the homespun feel of the restuarant at 1006 E. Hillsborough Avenue. Homemade red velvet cake, oxtails and pans of macaroni and cheese have helped lure customers to the dine and and carry out restaurant since Brown, a married mother of four, opened her doors in August. Brown, who helped run her mother-in-law's business before opening her own, recently talked soul food and business savvy while taking a break inside her restaurant. On her specialties: Fried turkey wings. I also have brown stew oxtails. I also do chitterlings. A lot of …

County Officials Reject Trinity Cafe's Request for Funding

The cafe feeds homeless people in Tampa Bay.

In an effort to raise money for a new facility to feed Tampa's homeless and working poor, officials from Trinity Cafe asked county commissioners this week for something to help with the Nebraska Avenue project: taxpayer money. On Wednesday, their request was rejected, according to a story on tbo.com. Funds have already been raised for the project - which would relocate the cafe from inside The Salvation Army on Florida Avenue to its own building at Nebraska Avenue near Columbus - but about $200,000 is needed before the cafe can be completed, said Cindy Davis, program director. Davis is hoping for grant money and donations to finish the project. What do you think about county officials rejecting the proposal? Tell us in the comments.
