You may be surprised by the answer!

Want to help your child stay fit or trim down? One of the more popular options, of course, is to join the local YMCA. Patch recently spoke with the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA to get some tips on how kids can stay healthy. The association consists of nearly 20 locations throughout the Bay Area. Patch: How much exercise should youngsters get? YMCA: Getting 45 to 60 minutes of activity on as many days as possible, even if it is broken up into 15-minute segments, is an important goal. Seminole Heights Retiree Sheds 60 Pounds Through YMCA Program

Diana Diggs is part of the YMCA's Silver Sneakers program, which encourages older adults to stay healthy.

After Diana Diggs retired from St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa in 2006, her health took a turn for the worse. She was diagnosed with high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and was placed on disability. Diggs, 55, was also overweight. When a friend told her about the YMCA's Silver Sneakers program - which encourages older adults to stay active and healthy - Diggs jumped at the chance to re-charge her life. We recently talked to her about what keeps her motivated and advice she has for others her age who want to get back in shape. Patch: What made you want to join the YMCA? Tampa YMCA to Break Ground on Layla’s House

Layla’s House will provide hundreds of Sulphur Springs children with the academic foundation needed to succeed in school.

From the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA: YMCA staff, city and county elected officials, and other supporters will gather at 11 a.m. Monday to celebrate the groundbreaking for Layla’s House, located at 1506 E. Eskimo Ave. in Sulphur Springs. Layla’s House is an early childhood and parenting learning center that will provide a strong educational foundation to Sulphur Springs children and parents. From the time they’re born to the age of 5, children will learn the skills needed to enter Kindergarten and be successful at learning.  The Layla’s House groundbreaking ceremony will happen nearly three years to the day that 16-year-old Layla Maria Chami lost her battle with leukemia. YMCA Set to Host Basketball Seminar

Former NBA player Haywoode Workman will be at the Bob Gilbertson Central City YMCA educating referees and coaches next Wednesday.

From 1989-2000, Haywoode Workman made his living playing on basketball's biggest stage. These days, he's doing everything he can to improve the game at its roots. Workman is now a Tampa resident and an active National Basketball Association official after four years of refereeing in the Continental Basketball Association. Next Wednesday, he'll be sharing his thoughts and knowledge with a slew of coaches and officials from around the Tampa area. "He'll be sharing a lot of his experiences and explaining how he went down the career path that he did," YMCA director of basketball operations Gary Brokaw said. "He'll be talking a lot to the officials of our leagues on how to be better officials and what the correct path to take to improve is." …

YMCA Program Encourages Healthy Habits for Latinos

The next Salsa, Sabor y Salud session starts May 7 at the Bob Gilbertson YMCA.

A new program lets you go beyond a quick-fix summer shape up and encourages the entire family to get involved. For Latino families looking to make long-term lifestyle changes, the Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA offers Salsa, Sabor y Salud (Food, Fun and Fitness). The next session runs from May 7 through June 25. “For many the words 'salsa y sabor' can awaken taste buds and emotions, describing the both the flavor of food and the flavor and essence of life,” program coordinator Glarisol Garcia said. The program is the first national program of its kind designed to encourage healthy lifestyles among Latino families. Bob Gilbertson Central City Y Announces Emma L. Kilpatrick College Scholarship

Applications for the $2,500 scholarship are due May 11.

Local high school seniors are invited to apply for the $2,500 Emma L. Kilpatrick Scholarship through the Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA. The scholarship helps deserving African American high school graduates obtain additional educational and training experiences in either traditional or technical colleges by providing $1,250 per semester.  Kilpatrick, a Tampa mother of six who passed away in 1988 at the age of 63, promoted the importance of education for the betterment of others. She encouraged young people to get an education, even though her own was limited, because she believed education was the road to endless possibilities. Central City YMCA Receives $25,000 Grant

A new 8-week course promotes healthy eating and increased physical activity for Hispanics and Latino families.

The Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA in Tampa Heights recently received a $25,000 grant from the Kraft Foods Foundation to introduce to a new program to promote healthy lifestyles for Hispanic and Latino families. Salsa, Sabor y Salud (Food, Fun and Fitness) was developed by the National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI). The curriculum raises awareness of the importance of good nutrition, increases levels of physical activity and encourages healthy lifestyle habits. The Central City YMCA is one of just 10 Y’s in the nation selected to pilot the program, which will will run from January through June, according to Rebecca Bray, spokeswoman for the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA.  It will focus on the Palmetto Beach, Sulphur Springs …
