Tampa Catholic Grad Strips in 'Magic Mike'

The locally filmed 'Magic Mike' is out in theaters and was inspired by star Channing Tatum's real-life experience as a Tampa stripper. Will you go see the movie?

"Magic Mike," a new Channing Tatum movie about male strippers in Tampa, is out in theaters today. Tatum — himself a Tampa Catholic High School graduate — assured TBO.com that the film is not about his own real-life experiences as a stripper in (where else?) Tampa. Tatum worked for eight months at a club called Joy that later shut down. . He told TBO.com: Look, I'll just be really, really, honest; the only thing that is really me, the only factual truths, I was 18 when I went into this thing (stripping)," Tatum said in Miami last week. "I dropped out of college, I played football and I had a sister. "And the rest of it is completely made up." At the same time, he said in a Tampa Bay Times story and in other national media interviews that …

Tampa Catholic Teen Strives So That 'Everyone Can Play'

Owen Sarwatka, 17, is working through many of his own health problems to put on an event that shares his passion for baseball with special needs children.

What should a 17-year-old do while laid up in the hospital after gall bladder surgery?  Owen Sarwatka had plenty of things to do, like line up sponsors, check on merchandise, make food arrangements, and organize the participants for his second annual Everyone Can Play baseball clinic for special needs youths, this Saturday at Tampa Catholic High School Sports Complex.  “He spent five days in the hospital,” recalled his mother Suzanne Sarwatka, “his gall bladder was out.”  You have to rest, mom told son.  “But it's for the kids,” son replied. “I can't let the kids down.”   Owen's gall bladder removal was just one of five surgeries he's had in the past eight weeks, but hey, he's expecting about 200 people on Saturday. “I hate to let the kids…

Tampa Catholic Football Tops Bloomingdale High

The Crusaders started slow but eased past Bloomingdale in the end by a score 33-14.

Tampa Catholic High School's football team quickly recovered from a first quarter deficit to put Bloomingdale High to bed on Friday night by a final score of 33-14. Bloomingdale's leading rusher Eugene Baker got the scoring started with a 27-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but the Crusaders would find their footing in the 2nd quarter scoring 20 unanswered points. "I thought we did well on our first few drives but we just couldn't make it count," Tampa Catholic coach Bob Henriquez said. "In the second quarter, we executed perfectly. On both sides of the ball I thought we dominated the line of scrimmage well." The Crusaders offensive line was the key to the victory as they dominated Bloomingdale up front and gave four different …

Player of the Week

Player of the Week: Star Steele

Star Steele brings more than impressive stats to the court for a Tampa Catholic volleyball program that is thriving.

Star Steele is dangerous in front of a volleyball net. The 5-foot-10 inch senior at Tampa Catholic High School is the leading assist getter and leading blocker for the school's largely successful volleyball team, but her stats aren't what she feels is most important about what she brings to the game. "I think it's the intensity that I have when I'm out there that is most effective," Steele said. "I'm relentless with my team and I'm always telling them that it doesn't matter that we're not the tallest team, we can be the fastest. With enough hard work and execution we should be able to pull out any match." Her stat line is impressive, however. Boasting 38 kills, 23 solo blocks and a team leading 274 assists this season, Steele is making her…

Tampa Catholic Volleyball Falls to National Superpower

The Crusaders volleyball team took on No.3 nationally ranked Berkeley Prep suffering their second loss of the season.

Berkeley Prep rolled over Tampa Catholic High School on Tuesday night handing the Crusaders their second loss of the season taking their record to 12-2. Tampa Catholic hung tight with the Buccaneers in the first game of the match. After being tied at 16-16 however, the Crusaders fell apart allowing the opposition to score nine straight points. "I think that we came into this game believing in ourselves but after strong starts in the first two games we let it slip," head volleyball coach John Babbitt said. "We've played some good teams so and I'm happy with how we're improving but we're not to the point that we can beat a team like Berkeley Prep." In the second game Tampa Catholic fought hard but fell by a score of 25-18 after trailing 6-1 …

Player of the Week

Player of the Week: Jordan Rich-Rogers

Tampa Catholic High School's Jordan Rich-Rogers is blasting through defenses this season with speed and power.

Jordan Rich-Rogers is not a big football player, but his size is working to his advantage this season. The junior tailback for Tampa Catholic High School stands at 5-foot-8 inches, weighing around 190 lbs. The Crusaders have set lofty goals as a team this season as they look to get back into the playoffs for a third consecutive season and in his first year as a full time tailback Rich-Rogers has set personal goals to the same standard as he lines up behind an offensive line that boasts multiple 300 pound blockers. "We're looking to win games and be a lot better than we were last season," Rich-Rogers said. "I'm personally aiming for 1,300 yards this season and an average of one touchdown per game but all I really care about is that we're 2-…

Crusader Standout Humbly Accepts Accolades

Tampa Catholic sophomore Corey Martinez is attracting attention from top level coaches and influential football minds.

Corey Martinez doesn't like a lot of attention, but these days he's getting it. The 6-foot-4 305 pound offensive lineman for Tampa Catholic High School was recently selected to the IMG All-Madden Team for the second consecutive year as a sophomore. The IMG All-Madden team is based out of Bradenton and is comprised of 28 of the nation's most elite high school football players. It is a list that is sorted by professional coaches and is an honor for any high school player to receive. "It was a great experience because there's a lot of good coaches out there," Martinez said. "It's always a great opportunity because you get to learn from guys who have played and coached at the highest level. As for the award, I don't really like publicity for …
