Volunteers Planning to Round Up Feral Cats in Seminole Heights

Possible volunteers say they would like to partner with an organization like the SPCA to get the cats off of the streets.

If you've spotted feral cats in Seminole Heights, you may not be the only one. In an effort to rid the community of the sometimes pesky feral cats, volunteers are debating whether to start rounding up the cats in Seminole Heights. A lot of cats are located in areas such as that between Martin Luther …

Can Prostitution Be Eradicated from the Heights?

Members of the Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association met with Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor to discuss concerns about crime in the neighborhood.

What do you think needs to be done to eliminate prostitution in the Seminole Heights area? Tell us in the comments section below. When Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor announced the new Prostitution Enforcement Zone (PEZ) program last February, we asked Patch readers if the crackdown on prostitution would eliminate a problem that has plagued the Seminole Heights communities for decades. But Monday night, April 30, prostitution was still the main topic of conversation during a meeting with Castor, where members of the Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association discussed concerns about crime in the neighborhood. “(Prostitution) is the most unique crime issue we deal with because it is so unpredictable,” said Castor, who is a Seminole Heights…

On Sept. 17, residents will come together to celebrate the milestone at the Seminole Heights Garden Center. “Every single civic organization in Seminole Heights is a part of this,” said Evan St. Ives, president of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association. “We're going to have all kinds of activities for adults and children.” St. Ives said that Seminole Heights is a unique neighborhood that deserves to be celebrated. “In this neighborhood, you know who your neighbors are and there's always someone willing to help you. Southern Brewing & Winemaking Gets First Round of Approval from Tampa City Council

Seminole Heights moves one step closer to gaining a home brewing retailer after the meeting on Thursday night.

After a lengthy public hearing on Thursday evening regarding a petition by Southern Brewing & Winemaking for a special use permit to sell beer, wine and liquor at its future location at 4500 N. Nebraska Ave., the Tampa City Council moved the issue forward to a second public hearing  and vote on June 23. Council members addressed the concerns of residents about hard liquor sales and noise at the store's future location by stipulating a condition that no distilled spirits may be sold for consumption on or off the premises and that the business may not install amplified music outside or have amplified music emanate from the interior. Southern Brewing & Winemaking is currently at 1717  E. Busch Blvd. The business is co-owned by Brian and Kelly…

The green space project met Wednesday evening in Southeast Seminole Heights.

Leave the car at home. That's the message of The Green Artery, a Central Tampa neighborhood-based project created to identify and connect the green spaces in Central Tampa. The group met in Giddens Park Wednesday evening. “We want to encourage people to learn where these beautiful green spaces are,” said Myron Griffin, co-chair of the project. “We're looking at the bicyclist's point of view and the pedestrian's point of view.” The group is creating a map of green areas in Central Tampa, including bike lanes, parks and trails. The area covered includes all of greater Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights, Ybor City, Channelside and downtown Tampa — 19 neighborhoods in all. The project began in 2010 and meetings have been held in a different …

Home Improvement Team (HIT) Targets Shadowlawn Home this Saturday

Come volunteer to help beautify a home with your neighbors in Southeast Seminole Heights.

Volunteers are being sought to join the Home Improvement Team (HIT) in its Saturday project at member Denise Toledo's home in Southeast Seminole Heights. Toledo was one of the original team members and has participated in three previous HIT projects herself,  organizer Maria Garcia-Gutierrez said in a recent listserv message to members of the Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association. The focus of Saturday's project is curb appeal. The wrought iron railing along front of the house needs to have some residual paint scraped off, Garcia-Gutierrez said. The remainder of railing needs to be sanded with a wire brush to remove rust so that the railing may be treated with a rust inhibitor. Since the inhibitor must be left to "do its thing" for…
