Peanut Butter Plant to Starbucks, Whole Foods Shut Down by FDA

The Sunland Inc. plant that distributes products to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Kilwins, Target and others is linked to Salmonella contamination that made at least 41 people ill in 20 states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that it has blocked food distribution from the Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in New Mexico whose products were subject to a wide recall in recent months because of salmonella contamination. The various types of Sunland peanut butter products—sold under several brands by major food retailers, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target—had been part of a voluntary recall that began in September and later was expanded to include other nut butters as well as processed nuts and peanuts. Several of these items are sold at various stores in and around Seminole Heights. The FDA action announced Monday is a mandatory order. Florida Whole Foods Recalls Some Prepared Foods

The voluntary recall is for prepared foods that contain raw yellow onions, because of potential health risks from Listeria.

A voluntary recall of certain prepared foods containing raw onions is under way at 17 Whole Foods Markets in Florida, including in Tampa. Customers are being asked to throw out certain foods (see list below) and return to their local Whole Foods with the receipt for a refund. The items would have been bought between July 7 and July 27. Although no one has reported becoming ill from eating the products, there is a concern about the quality of raw yellow onions in the fresh food items. The store announced that the onions may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall was initiated by Gills Onions, which processed the yellow onions.
