Driver, 87, Dies After Traffic Crash in Old Seminole Heights

Robert Homer Smith died a day after his pickup truck struck a car at Nebraska Avenue and Hanna Avenue, just a few blocks from his home, Tampa Police said.

A local man has died as a results of injuries he suffered in a Thursday afternoon traffic crash in Old Seminole Heights, according to Tampa Police. Robert Homer Smith, 87, died Friday at Tampa General Hospital, where he had been taken following Thursday's accident and was initially listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said. According to investigators, Anderson was driving his Chevy pickup southbound on Nebraska Avenue crossing Hanna Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday when he struck a 2009 Buick Lucerne. The driver of the Buick, Ryan Linsdey Anderson, 24, of Temple Terrace, was apparently turning westbound onto Hanna. The accident happened just a few blocks from Smith's East Powhatan Avenue home, according to police. …

Fatal Crash Exposes Danger of Intersection in Old Seminole Heights

Alex Johnson was killed in a fatal crash May 7 at the intersection of Lambright Street and Florida Avenue in Old Seminole Heights, but could it have been avoided?

Alex Johnson was familiar with the intersection of Lambright Street and Florida Avenue in Old Seminole Heights, but that familiarity wasn't enough to save her life. It was May 7 when Johnson, 27, came to the stop sign at Lambright heading west and needed to turn left onto Florida Avenue. She looked and pulled out, only to have her blue Infiniti T-boned by a Chevy Blazer driving north on Florida. The driver of the SUV would sustain minor injuries, but Johnson would arrive at St. Joseph's Hospital already dead. Alex left behind her Durant High school sweetheart and husband, David Johnson, a number of cats that she rescued and a heartbroken family. Police: Two Brothers Shot in Old Seminole Heights

Tampa Police are on the scene in the 1600 block of East Paris Street, where they say both victims suffered serious injuries. A 27-year-old man has been arrested.

Update, 6:45 p.m.: The 27-year-old suspect who shot two brothers while in the front yard area of 1604 E. Paris St. this afternoon has been identified as Akhnaten K. Casey, according to Tampa Police Department. The victims, Abdullah Ibn Al Islam, 33, and Edward S Evans, 22, have been transported to Tampa General Hospital and they are in critical condition, according to Tampa Police Lt. Ron McMullen. Police said that Casey and Evans were engaging in an argument over an alleged theft of property, during which Casey allegedly pulled a handgun and shot Evens in the upper torso. Woman Robbed near Publix Supermarket in Old Seminole Heights

A woman was robbed in the 900 block of East Paris Street early Friday, May 4.

A woman, whose name has not been released, was robbed early Friday, May 4, in the 900 block of East Paris Street, according to Tampa Police District 2. Around 6.45 a.m., the victim was approached by a white male who threaten her with a piece of glass demanding her purse, said Lisa Timmer, Neighborhood Affairs Liaison for Tampa Police District 2. The suspect fled the scene on foot with the victim’s purse and the victim was not injured. Timmer said that several police officers and helicopters were dispatched because several people living in the neighborhood called 911 to report the robbery. Old Seminole Heights Man Charged in Fatal Shooting

Jamario M. Nobles, 20, of 220 E. Cayuga St., is accused of fatally shooting Jarrett Michael Eitson, 21, during a robbery attempt in the early morning hours of March 31, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

An Old Seminole Heights man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last month outside a bar on Harney Road. Jamario M. Nobles, 20, of 220 E. Cayuga St., is accused of fatally shooting Jarrett Michael Eitson, 21, during a robbery attempt in the early morning hours of March 31, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Detectives said Eitson and two friends were leaving a bar in the area of 56th Street and Harney Road when they were approached by two armed men who tried to rob them. Eitson, of Sable Park, was shot and died at the scene. New Baby Boutique Coming to Old Seminole Heights

The cottage at Hanna and Central avenues is slated to house the Nursery Experience.

A second commercial hot spot might be developing in Seminole Heights. The small clutch of newer businesses at the Hanna and Central avenues intersection will likely be joined by the Nursery Experience, tentatively by mid-May. Co-owner Amy Jensen is currently renovating a small 1941 house at 6202 N. Central Ave. along with her business partner and fiance Juan Camacho. The couple are planning what Jensen describes as a "gallery boutique," with children's themed art, decor, baby blankets, baby cosmetics, plus an outdoor garden to host events like baby showers.  Jensen and Camacho are scheduled for a hearing before the city zoning board on April 12. Woman Dies in Old Seminole Heights House Fire

The body of Laura Grumney, 56, was discovered in the rear doorway of the house at 5609 N. Seminole Ave. on Saturday, after she apparently failed to heed warnings from a neighbor not to go back inside, officials said.

An Old Seminole Heights woman died in a house fire Saturday afternoon after apparently not heeding warnings not to go back inside, Tampa Fire Rescue reports. The body of Laura Grumney, 56, was discovered in the rear doorway of the house at 5609 N. Seminole Ave., officials said. Fire rescue units responded shortly after 3 p.m. to find "heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the house," Captain Lonnie Benniefield said in a news release. It took firefighters about 18 minutes to get the blaze under control. An estimated 22 responders were dispatched to the scene. The Tampa Water Department will be testing water mains starting Monday, March 12, which could lead to delays and detours near the Old Seminole Heights and Woodland Terrace neighborhoods.

Drivers can expect traffic delays and detours near the Old Seminole Heights and Woodland Terrace neighborhoods starting today, the Tampa Water Department reports. The department will be conducting water main leak assessments between March 12-30. Motorists should use caution during those three weeks in the following areas: Barricades and signage will be located in the area as necessary to assist with traffic flow. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling in the assessment areas. Water service will not be affected, the department said. The project will help locate leaks that have the potential to contribute to main breaks. A water main break on Tuesday shut down a portion of East Osborne Avenue for several hours and affected traffic …
