Middleton High School students, faculty, staff, athletic boosters, motorcycle riders and the surrounding community are invited to the school's fourth annual "Motorcycle Ride for Education." The event is on Saturday, April 13, and begins with registration at 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Bikes take off at 10:30 a.m., and will travel throughout Tampa Bay. Registration is $15, and includes a giveaway for a 40-inch flat screen TV. The event also includes: free health screenings, a yard sale, food and merchandise vendors and music. More than 200 riders and guests went to last year’s event.

From City of Tampa officials: After completing the downtown portion of the InVision Tampa draft master plan, city officials and global planners have spent the past four months focused on the Nebraska-Hillsborough Corridor. As part of this, the team has been walking and talking with residents and business owners in the area. Now, the community collaboration will continue as the InVision Tampa team leads the future planners, designers and engineers of a Middleton High School project aimed at enhancing a portion of the corridor study area. “The InVision plan represents a blueprint for the next 20 years. A student walking home from Middleton High School was robbed on Monday afternoon, according to the Tampa Police Department. Here's what happened, according to police: Around 2:12 p.m. on Monday, the unidentified female victim was walking home from the school, 4801 N. 22nd Street, when she was approached from behind by a male suspect. The man moved next to her and pushed her arm, knocking her to the ground. Then, he took out a pair of scissors and cut the strap of the victim's black purse. He fled south on N. 19th Street. An officer on the way to an unrelated call saw the man fleeing east on E. Osborne Avenue. Additional patrols were called to the scene, but the man was never found. Founder Anton Hopen said the fifth edition of the event produced the most entrants as well as the stiffest competition for the top prizes.
The finals of the 2013 USF Young Innovator Competition were held Monday night on the University of South Florida campus, featuring the top 10 of the nearly 600 submissions this year. First prize went to Mica Jadick, a seventh-grader from Martinez Middle School in Lutz, for her cereal-sifting device. George Seits from Middleton High School in Tampa took home second place, while Katie Warren, a third-grader from St. Paul’s School in Clearwater, won third prize. A robbery occurred at the Middleton High School soccer field on Friday, according to the Tampa Police Department. Around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, the unidentified victim was standing at the bleachers when three men wearing ski masks approached him, according to police. One of the men was holding a six-inch silver knife, police said, and asked the victim, "What do you have for me?" The suspect took the victim's backpack, which contained a laptop computer and school books, police said. The victim was then told to empty his pockets, displaying an iPod. Twelve hours after his wounded body was discovered by Tampa Police in front of Middleton high school, a candle light vigil was held in front of the campus to remember former Tiger athletic standout, 25-year old O.J. Murdock. Murdock died just before 11 a.m. on Monday due to a self inflicted gun shot wound. His final days are a tale of uncertainty as the former Tennessee Titans wide receiver was said to have been dismissed from practice in recent days for personal reasons. O.J. Murdock was found by Tampa Police this morning with what appears to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound. He has since died of his injuries.
Update 1:53 p.m., July 30: O.J. Murdock has died of his injuries, according to the Tampa Police Department. Earlier: Tampa Police are investigating what has been classified as an attempted suicide by former Middleton High School wide receiver and a two-time state track champion O.J. Murdock. Murdock was found in his car by police around 8:30 a.m. today in front of the high school where he was so successful as an athlete. His injuries are listed as critical by the police. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital immediately. There were no witnesses to the incident. Aug. 31 games for Hillsborough, Chamberlain, Middleton and other Hillsborough County schools are being moved to Saturday, Sept. 1 because of security issues and the Republican National Convention.
The Friday night lights will have to move to Saturday for a weekend in August thanks to the Republican National Convention. All high school football games in Hillsborough County scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31 will be pushed back a day when the RNC comes to Tampa, the school district announced. That means the following games will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1: The RNC will be in town from Aug. 27-30, and the district announced in June it would not hold any sporting events that week. A future generation of teachers is in the making as the Hillsborough Education Foundation certified 29 students Monday night as part of their Urban Teaching Academy. The foundation raised a total of $236,000 for the four-year high school program geared toward aspiring teachers. Students who meet the requirements are eligible for a scholarship covering the cost of tuition and books to complete a four-year degree at a community college and university. The catch is that students have to sign a contract that obligates them to return to teach for three years at an urban school in Hillsborough County. Masquerade, the robotics team from Middleton Magnet High School, won the World Championship of the 2012 First Tech Challenge (FTC).

The top 128 First Tech Challenge robotics teams from around the world met to compete for the FTC World Championship in St. Louis, MO, April 25-28. Although most teams were from the United States, there were teams from China, India, Romania, the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. After two days of qualifying matches, 24 teams moved on to the semi-finals – 12 teams in the Edison Division, including Middleton’s Masquerade, and 12 teams in the Franklin Division.
