Food, Toys and Gift Cards Needed at Metropolitan Ministries

Find out how to donate.

This just in from Metropolitan Ministries: Metropolitan Ministries is part of a disturbing new trend among local nonprofits - record low donations that threaten its ability to serve thousands of struggling Bay-area families in need of food and toys for Christmas.  The Ministries is asking for the community to take immediate action and make a donation of food, toys or funds to ensure that every registered family will receive assistance this holiday. The first indicator came at the end of November when Metropolitan Ministries faced a budget shortfall of almost $140,000 and 100,000 pounds of food.  The Ministries’ dedicated supporters donated more than 9,000 toys, but these generous gifts still represent less than 50 percent of the 20,000 …

The Ministries still has more than 2,200 local families scheduled to receive assistance in the next two days, and staples like turkeys, canned fruit and yams are desperately needed.  A few facts about the need: ·         On Monday, 300 new families came to our doors to register for help. ·         Donations are dramatically lower - 100,000 pounds less food than this time last year. ·         The Ministries is having to buy large quantities of turkeys, cans of fruit and yams to meet the demand. ·         We are grateful to see the large donations of vegetables and cereal …

Corbett Prep Students Donate to Metropolitan Ministries

The donation was for the holiday tent.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, the holiday tent at Metropolitan Ministries recently opened. To help those in need, Corbett Prep Student Council led a school-wide effort to collect and pack 961 cans for Metropolitan Ministries “Compassion + Action” network to provide support for the homeless at the tent. Student Council Advisors Jenn Jagdmann and Stephen Shoe coordinated the drive, and Corbett Prep moms volunteered to deliver the boxes of canned goods.  What do you think of the school's effort to help the organization? Tell us in the comments.
