Restaurant Group Awards $12,000 Grant to Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Tampa provides hot meals to more than 700 home-bound residents.

More home-bound Tampa residents will be able to enjoy a hot lunch, thanks to a $12,000 grant from Darden Restaurants. Darden Restaurants, which include Bahama Breeze, Capital Grille, Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, awarded the second annual Restaurant Community Grant to Meals on Wheels of Tampa. Now in its 37th year, Meals on Wheels of Tampa, headquartered at 550 W. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa, delivers hot lunches to more than 700 home-bound residents each weekday. “Our employees are incredibly passionate about the communities where they live, and our restaurant teams are in a position to understand and help address the needs of their communities,” said Drew Madsen, Darden Restaurants’ president and chief operating officer…

Meals on Wheels Looking for Volunteers

Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization that helps feed home-bound people and senior citizens, is looking for volunteers. Volunteers pick up the hot meals between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The delivery of the whole route takes about an hour, with approximately 12 stops, said Andrea Brogen of MOW. Volunteers can choose which day of week - Monday through Friday - and how often (from once a week to once a month), said Brogen. Volunteers can pick up food to deliver at one of two locations near Seminole Heights: The main office and kitchen at 550 W Hillsborough Avenue, and Northeast United Methodist Church at 6400 N 15th Street. Sweetbay Donates $50,000 to Meals on Wheels

The money will buy food and a new vehicle to continue East Tampa and University-area expansion.

Sweetbay Supermarket will announce the donation of $50,000 to Meals on Wheels Tampa on Tuesday, November 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the Meals on Wheels offices at 550 West Hillsborough Avenue. The donation, which coincides with Thanksgiving, will support Meals on Wheels’ mission of serving meals to elders, and the continued expansion of the non-profit organization in the East Tampa and University areas.  With the additional funds, Meals on Wheels will be able to serve 10,400 meals to elders who can’t afford to purchase meals.   According to the U.S. Census, approximately 2,000 people in the East Tampa service area live below the poverty line.
