The calf, Jiyu, is doing well after being born three days before Mother's Day, according to zoo officials.
Three days before Mother's Day, an endangered Indian rhinoceros named Jamie gave birth to a male calf at Lowry Park Zoo. The birth is the third for the zoo in five years, officials said. The calf, who was given the Indian name "Jiyu" for compassionate friend, is spending time with his mom away from the zoo's exhibits. "This calf represents our third successful offspring in support of the Indian rhino management program in North America," said Dr. Larry Killmar, vice president of animal science, in a news release. "This tremendous achievement requires a great deal of hard work and dedication by the animal management staff." Bahati is four months old, and has grown from 64 pounds to 283 pounds, zoo officials say.
This just in from officials at Lowry Park Zoo: Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is wild about moms, including one of the newest who lives at the Zoo: "Betty," an adult female okapi with her 4-month-old offspring, "Bahati." At the Zoo's recent Karamu gala, the Emerick family of Tampa won the live auction opportunity to sponsor and name the calf. They selected a Swati name, Bahati, which means lucky. Bahati is just beginning to emerge from the newborn "nesting phase," a hiding behavior common and in the wild, providing protection from predators. He has grown from 64 pounds at birth on January 6, to more than 283 pounds in April. Hadiah, a 7-year-old female orangutan, chows down on a hard-boiled egg at Lowry Park Zoo.
The Bornean orangutan family at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo had an “egg” citing morning with the zoo’s annual Orangutan Egg Hunt. The four playful primates enjoyed hard-boiled eggs, baskets, toys and treats throughout the exhibit. In addition to enjoying the activity, the orangutans benefit from the challenge of exploring their habitat for treats, stimulating them both mentally and physically.

The manatee calf is in critical condition at the Tampa zoo hospital, suffering from 'cold stress.' ABC Action News tweeted this photo of the manatee.
A 90-pound manatee calf rescued Wednesday, March 27, in St. Petersburg would have likely died if it had not been noticed by a wildlife expert working in the area, according to media reports. Fox News interviewed Fish and Wildlife staff member Jennifer Johnson: "We noticed right off the bat that there was a really small calf looking like it might be by itself, so after about five minutes of watching it with no mom around, I called the rescue team at the Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory," Jennifer Johnson recalled. The baby manatee is listed in critical condition today at Lowry Park Zoo, where the marine mammal was assessed and is being treated for the effects of "cold stress."
