A Hillsborough baseball player is doing everything he can with limited effect while a Tampa Catholic lacrosse player paved the way for her team's success.
Female Athlete of the Week: Bernadette Leone The Tampa Catholic High Schooll girls lacrosse team made it to the final of the state playoffs thanks to the efforts of captain and leading scorer Leone. The Lady Crusaders would lose in the final but it was an incredible run for a team that had only a handful of seniors. Leone led the team in scoring with 45 goals and 17 asssists heading into the state tournament. She is the pulse of the Lady Crusaders attack and an experienced leader. "She is really something," Tampa Catholic lacrosse coach Tim McGroff said. "She was amazing for us this year. We just tried to give her chances and whenever we did she took them." Male Athlete of the Week: Devin Lee It's been a rough year for Hillsborough High …

The Tampa Catholic girls lacrosse team won the regional final on Friday night giving them a birth in the state playoffs next week.
Tim McGroff's wolfpack is eating opponents alive. To the Tampa Catholic High School girls lacrosse team, "Wolfpack" is more than just a designed defensive play that McGroff can be heard screaming on the sidelines during the game, it's a mentality that the Lady Crusaders bring to the field. "When the other team gets the ball it's an organized play I call out for that indicates the type of defense I want them to play," McGroff said. "It's not just the work aspect though anymore, it's kind of fun for the girls to approach the game with a pack mentality." On Friday night, McGroff's wolfpack advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in his six year tenure as coach. They did it with a well rounded performance in which they toppled …

Eleven seniors will graduate from the Crusader lacrosse program this year.
The 2011 spring season represents one last opportunity for Tampa Catholic lacrosse. If the Crusaders are going to pursue glory, this year will have to be the year. With 11 seniors set to depart from the squad, this season has a special meaning for both the players and the coaching staff. “We’re a family,” senior defensive midfielder Aaron Buckley said. “Right now, we’re taking it game by game and trying to collect victories. We want to appreciate everyday we have as a family. We know that this is it. We want to make it a special season.” For coach Jim Gillies, the exodus of so many seniors will lead to a rebuilding season next year. With the non-senior talent he has on this squad however, Gillies is confident that his team can still …

While I applaud you for running an article about the Tampa Catholic girl's lacrosse team (or any lacrosse team) I must point out an error. Coach McGroff has not been the coach of the Tampa Catholic girl's team for the past 6 years. Last year the coach was Barbara Mergens and prior to that Tom O'Grady coached the team for 4 years, taking them to the playoffs as an FHSAA member 3 of those 4 years. …   more ›
