The new academic year begins Aug. 20 for Seminole Heights students.
Seminole Heights parents hoping to get a jump on planning activities around next year's Hillsborough County school calendar are in luck. The school district has released its list of important dates for the 2013-14 school year. As a bonus, it’s also released a tentative academic calendar dates for 2014-15. This school year (2012-13) ends Friday, June 7, 2013 with a release time that’s 2 ½ hours earlier than normal. Students only have one more day off before the year ends. That's Monday, May 27 in honor of Memorial Day, according to the district's website. The winners for the Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator, Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year will be announced.
Hillsborough's best educators will be honored this month. On March 28, winners of the Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator award, Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year will be announced. Hillsborough County officials are soliciting nominations for the Youth Excellence and Achievement Awards (YEA!) through Feb. 28. Nominations, which will be reviewed by the Commission on the Status of Women, can be submitted for middle and high school students in each of the categories below: Last year's winners hailed from Adams, Giunta and Tomlin middle schools and Bloomingdale, Chamberlain and Tampa Preparatory high schools. Seminole Heights students itching to put up their books for winter break don’t have too much longer to wait. Hillsborough County Public Schools officially lock up for the holidays after the last bell Friday, Dec. 21, according to the district's calendar. The winter break runs from Monday, Dec. 24, through Friday, Jan. 4. That means kids don’t have to hit the books again until Monday, Jan. 7, 2013. Parents should note that Seminole Heights schools won’t remain open for long though. They shut down again Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and again Jan. 22 for a non-student day. The second grading period ends Friday, Jan. 18. The sixth annual career and college fest will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Florida State Fairgrounds Entertainment Hall. The fest will run from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for middle magnet and high school students and families, 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. for traditional middle school students and families and 4:30 p.m. utnil 7:30 p.m. for the general public. The purpose is to give students a chance to discuss postsecondary programs, apprenticeships, college and technical school opportunities, according to Hillsborough school officials. A Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony will focus on banning the Council on American-Islamic Relations from Hillsborough County Schools. Brandon resident Terry Kemple, president of the Community Issues Council, a Christian political group, has joined forces with the Education Coalition, the Tampa 912, the Tampa Tea Party and the Pinellas Patriots to host a daylong remembrance and protest rally. Kemple became a vocal opponent of permitting members of CAIR to speak in Hillsborough County classrooms after learning that Hassan Shibly, executive director of the Tampa CAIR chapter, made a presentation to a world history class at Steinbrenner High School last year.
