The Crusaders struggled early on this season but are coming together under their new leadership.
Weathering the storm seems to a theme for the Tampa Catholic girls basketball team this season. Following their second straight state title in 2011 and three consecutive years of reaching the State Final Four, the Crusaders (14-9) have set the bar high for themselves. However, after losing their leading scorer and primary ball handler from last year to graduation, the team got off to a slow start as coach Nancy Kroll's stepdaughter, Micah Kroll, took the reins. "It's been a tough challenge for me to step into that role this season," Micah Kroll said. "Thankfully we had good team captains last year that I've been able to look at see how they got the team motivated. I have off and on games, but this is a good team around me, so I just focus …

The Lady Crusaders won their second consecutive Class 3A state championship with a 48-37 victory over North Broward in Lakeland 2Thursday night.
Nancy Kroll challenged her team to beat other good teams after a pair of losses in early December. Since then, the Tampa Catholic High School girls basketball team has gone on to win 24 straight games and lift its second state championship in two years. Star point guard Meghan Keough led the Lady Crusaders with a 30 point performance in the 48-37 victory over North Broward High School. Throughout the evening, Keough was able to get to the basket for easy points due to Broward's fear of Micah Kroll, who had been hot from beyond the three point line in her previous game. "They were keying in on Micah and it left a lot of space for Meghan to get to the basket," coach Kroll said. "We got baskets when we needed them. Kai Jones had a big game …

The Tampa Catholic girls basketball team will travel to Lakeland next Wednesday to play in the state tournament.
The Tampa Catholic girls basketball team will advance to the state tournament in Lakeland next week after a victory on the road against Southeast (Bradenton) on Saturday in the class 3A final. A win seemed all but assured at halftime with the Crusaders leading by a score of 28-12, but Southeast would gather themselves in the second half and press Tampa Catholic to the max. The Crusaders would end up hanging on by a score of 61-55. "We got into foul trouble in the second half and defensively we struggled," Crusader coach Nancy Kroll said. "They came out and hit some big shots, and we were actually down by four at one point, so we had to show a lot of mettle. We didn't lose our composure, and we got a big second half out of Kai Jones." Jones…

The Lady Crusaders pounded Fort Meade Tuesday night by a score of 73- 37.
Tampa Catholic High School's girls basketball team is set to play the winner of Bishop Verot (Fort Myers) and Bradenton Southeast on Saturday after defeating Fort Meade on Tuesday night. The Crusaders cruised to their 22nd straight victory by jumping all over the Lady Miners from the opening tip off. In the first half, Tampa Catholic found themselves with open shots from three point range that they were able to knock down and create a 42-22 halftime lead. "We really didn't know anything about this team so we just wanted to come out, be aggressive and make shots," forward Micah Kroll said. "We're just playing our hearts out right now and looking to get back to the state tournament with a chance to win it." The Crusaders got 63 of their 73 …

Seminole Heights Patch tracked down Chamberlain's winter athletes to find out where the Chiefs sit in the standings as they enter the Christmas break.
Boys Basketball (11-1) The Chiefs have their season off to a nearly perfect start thanks to big performances from a few key players. Senior Eric Storts broke the 1,000 point mark for his high school career in a Dec. 14 game against King with the first bucket of a 22 point performance. Sophomore Reggie Hart is averaging 20 points a game while his brother, Rod, contributes a steady 12 points per game. It's Chamberlain's defense, however, that is doing the most damage. Opponents are averaging a mere 51 points per game as the Chiefs swarm to the ball and can block shots with regularity. Meanwhile, on the offensive end Chamberlain is averaging a solid 64 points per game. The team was handed their first loss of the season at the City of Tampa…

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with the Crusaders winter teams to find out where Tampa Catholic stands at this point.
Boys Basketball (7-2) The Crusaders have had a busy schedule in December, playing in two tournaments as well as their regular season. The amount of games the team has played in a short time combined with exams for the players has meant that the team hasn't practiced much during the chaotic stretch. While the Crusaders have been successful in spite of their busy schedule, the players showed signs of wear in the City of Tampa Championship where they lost to Blake in the semi-finals. After falling behind by 15 points due to a terrible third quarter, the Crusaders stormed back into the game in the fourth reducing the lead to three. In the end, they would run out of gas and fall to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 68-59. "Our schedule has been …

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with all of Middleton's winter sports programs to see where the Tigers stand during the holiday break.
Boys Basketball (0-9) The Tigers are in a transition year as a new era of Middleton basketball is underway. Coach Darius Ford is in his first year in charge of the Tigers who have yet to win a game this season. Middleton's struggles have centered around their lack of a true big man. Without a powerful presence in the paint, they've struggled to track down rebounds and stop opposing big men from scoring. On top of that, Middleton has been one of the worst shooting teams in the county, shooting around 30 percent from the field and a lowly 35 percent from the free throw line. Perhaps the biggest adjustment, however, has been in the academic philosophy of Ford. "The boys have to get used to my philosophy when it comes to grades," Ford said. "…

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with all of Hillsborough High School's winter athletics programs to find out where the teams sit at this point in the season.
Boys Basketball (4-5) Coach Stephanie Crawford is excited for her second year as the Hillsborough High School boys basketball coach because for the first time, the team is truly hers. Last year, Crawford walked into a program with a lot of seniors and a team ready to compete for a championship. But with the Terriers new squad, Crawford has developed a connection with her players based on her own practices and has fallen in love with the result. Though the Terriers are 4-5, they're a young, up-and-coming team that prioritizes defense above all else. Against Leto High earlier this month, the Terriers rode their defensive effort to a 29 point thrashing of the Falcons, walking lay up after lay up to the hoop. "Defense is the pride end of the …

After losing three seniors, Coach Curtis Folson said it might take years to turn the team into a contender.
It's going to be a growing process for the Middleton High School girls basketball team. After all, UConn wasn't built in a night. UConn is on the verge of breaking the all-time NCAA mark for consecutive basketball wins, but the Huskies didn't start out a powerhouse. It took years. That's what Middleton coach Curtis Folson said it might take to build Middleton into a contender. His Tigers were off to a 2-7 start after a 41-31 home loss to Bloomingdale on Dec. 15, but the Tigers stuck close and were down by four when Bloomingdale went on a 6-0 ruin to close out the game. Jacquelyne Simmons led the Tigers with nine points on three 3-pointers and co-captain Malika Tyler added eight. Folson knew it would be a long process rebuilding the Tigers…
