While local blood banks aren't being called on to respond to the April 15 Boston Marathon tragedy, officials remind residents that needs at home always exist.
When disaster like the Boston Marathon bombings strike, donated blood supply is vital to helping people in critical medical need. So far, the local Tampa Bay blood centers have not been tapped to help survivors in Boston, but officials say they remain at the ready in case their services are needed. "We reached out to our contacts in Boston and we were told blood is currently being sent by donors closer to Boston," said Susan Forbes, chief marketing communications officer for One Blood, the umbrella organization for Florida Blood Services. "We continue to monitor and remain in close contact should they need additional support." From officials at Florida Blood Services: Walgreens is proud to be a lifesaving community partner with Florida Blood Services, a division of OneBlood, Inc., by sponsoring blood drives throughout the month of April. Bloodmobiles will be on site at select Walgreens stores so blood donors can conveniently share their gift of life to benefit patients. All participating blood donors will receive a $10 Walgreens gift card, along with a wellness checkup of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, plus a free cholesterol screening. This just in from officials at Florida Blood Services: Blood donors will receive special holiday thank-you gifts when they give at select Publix Super Markets over the Easter Holiday weekend. A free $10 gift card to Publix, a wellness check, iron count and cholesterol screening are provided to all donors. Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can be blood donors. Identification is required prior to donation.
