Charity Dodgeball Tournament Goes Awry, Still Raises Funds

The 3rd Annual Dodgeball For a Cause tournament didn't end the way organizers had planned.

The tournament's bracket had only two blanks left to be filled, but a winner wouldn't be decided by opponents knocking each other out of the game with a catch or throw. In the semifinals of this year's Dodgeball For a Cause tournament, Independent Dodgeball advanced to the final with a victory in their match against the Brandon Boys. The other semifinal between Six Men Twelve Balls and the Dodge Fathers didn't end so politely. As the the game got underway, the intensity of the competition over took the moment. As players backed away from the game commencing rush to collect a dodgeball, one thought he heard a whistle to start the game and heaved a ball at the opposition striking him as he picked up a ball. Police to Raise Funds With Dodgeball Tournament

The third annual Dodgeball for a Cause fundraiser held by the Tampa Bay Storm will take place this Saturday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

More than seven hundred people from around the Tampa Bay area will participate in this weekend's Dodgeball for a Cause tournament which will benefit the City of Tampa Police Athletic League. The event has run each of the last two years benefiting different charities and attracts 128 teams of firemen, police officers and private companies that dress up in costume to compete in the bracket style competition. "Last year there were men dressed as nuns with beards," police spokeswoman Rebecca Jones said. "Prizes are be given away all day in raffles on the side, but the event is just a lot of fun to watch and a great laugh. It's really a fun family event and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger."
