Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association Paints Its Heart Out

Paint Your Heart Out, Tampa is a city wide program in which volunteers team up to paint the homes of low-income or elderly community residents.

Members of the Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association teamed up Saturday, April 21, 2012 to participate in Paint Your Heart Out, Tampa, an annual city-wide volunteer effort to paint the homes of low-income or elderly residents. The program is in its 24th year, and SESHCA has participated every year, says team captain, Frank Roder. In that time, he says they've painted 28 houses, occasionally painting two homes in one year. Over the past two and a half decades the project has only been rained out once, Roder says. This year, the weather held off …

Activist Finds Personal Joy in Building Community

Lena Young-Green learned how to get involved at the policy-making level from her years working as a chief legislative assistant. Her parents taught her to become involved in her neighborhood.

But I’m doing what I love.” A longtime senior legislative assistant to former state Sen. Jim Hargrett, she’s been a leader in organizing residents to bond, rebuild and beautify Tampa Heights since she moved here in 1981. She started by simply joining the neighborhood civic…

Local Businesses, Police Help Children and Parents Have Happier Holiday

At the Tampa Police Department's R.I.C.H House in Sulphur Springs, children and parents selected donated gifts to share with their loved ones.

Life lessons come in all forms. But when you're an at-risk child who can't afford gifts for mom, a push from Santa's helpers never hurts. Through the kindness of volunteers from Bayshore Baptist Church and the City of Tampa, approximately 125 kids had the opportunity to choose gifts for their mothers and guardians at the R.I.C.H. (Resources in Community Hope) House in Sulphur Springs Tuesday. Also known as the Weed and Seed House, the R.I.C.H. House provides neighborhood children a positive alternative to hanging out in the streets. On Dec. 21, volunteers transformed the inside to a small gift shop as kids perused items that ranged from perfume to earrings. Tampa Police Officer Debbie Boles has run the R.I.C.H. House since it opened nine …
