Tampa Catholic Boys Basketball Advances in Region

The Crusaders narrowly beat Avon Park on Thursday night to advance to the next round of the 3A regional tournament.

Tampa Catholic High School's boys basketball team hung on in a close contest at Avon Park on Thursday night, winning 74-72 to advance to the next round of the class 3A regional tournament. The Crusaders fell behind by as many as 11 points in the early going but were able to trim Avon Park's lead to seven before the half, a position coach Don Dziagwa felt lucky to be in. "After the way we started out I was ready to tell the bus driver to warm the engine up," Dziagwa said. "But being down seven at the half felt like a good position for us. We thought if we could just stay close we could wear them out. Sure enough they started missing shots in the fourth quarter and it gave us our chance." Senior Lashawn Harrison led the way for the Crusaders…

Chamberlain High School Athletics Update

Seminole Heights Patch tracked down Chamberlain's winter athletes to find out where the Chiefs sit in the standings as they enter the Christmas break.

Boys Basketball (11-1) The Chiefs have their season off to a nearly perfect start thanks to big performances from a few key players. Senior Eric Storts broke the 1,000 point mark for his high school career in a Dec. 14 game against King with the first bucket of a 22 point performance. Sophomore Reggie Hart is averaging 20 points a game while his brother, Rod, contributes a steady 12 points per game. It's Chamberlain's defense, however, that is doing the most damage. Opponents are averaging a mere 51 points per game as the Chiefs swarm to the ball and can block shots with regularity. Meanwhile, on the offensive end Chamberlain is averaging a solid 64 points per game. The team was handed their first loss of the season at the City of Tampa…

Tampa Catholic Athletics Update

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with the Crusaders winter teams to find out where Tampa Catholic stands at this point.

Boys Basketball (7-2) The Crusaders have had a busy schedule in December, playing in two tournaments as well as their regular season. The amount of games the team has played in a short time combined with exams for the players has meant that the team hasn't practiced much during the chaotic stretch. While the Crusaders have been successful in spite of their busy schedule, the players showed signs of wear in the City of Tampa Championship where they lost to Blake in the semi-finals. After falling behind by 15 points due to a terrible third quarter, the Crusaders stormed back into the game in the fourth reducing the lead to three. In the end, they would run out of gas and fall to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 68-59. "Our schedule has been …

Middleton High School Athletics Update

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with all of Middleton's winter sports programs to see where the Tigers stand during the holiday break.

Boys Basketball (0-9) The Tigers are in a transition year as a new era of Middleton basketball is underway. Coach Darius Ford is in his first year in charge of the Tigers who have yet to win a game this season. Middleton's struggles have centered around their lack of a true big man. Without a powerful presence in the paint, they've struggled to track down rebounds and stop opposing big men from scoring. On top of that, Middleton has been one of the worst shooting teams in the county, shooting around 30 percent from the field and a lowly 35 percent from the free throw line. Perhaps the biggest adjustment, however, has been in the academic philosophy of Ford. "The boys have to get used to my philosophy when it comes to grades," Ford said. "…

Hillsborough High Athletics Update

Seminole Heights Patch caught up with all of Hillsborough High School's winter athletics programs to find out where the teams sit at this point in the season.

Boys Basketball (4-5) Coach Stephanie Crawford is excited for her second year as the Hillsborough High School boys basketball coach because for the first time, the team is truly hers. Last year, Crawford walked into a program with a lot of seniors and a team ready to compete for a championship. But with the Terriers new squad, Crawford has developed a connection with her players based on her own practices and has fallen in love with the result. Though the Terriers are 4-5, they're a young, up-and-coming team that prioritizes defense above all else. Against Leto High earlier this month, the Terriers rode their defensive effort to a 29 point thrashing of the Falcons, walking lay up after lay up to the hoop. "Defense is the pride end of the …
