Tampa Lawyer Donates $2,000 to Make Roads Safer for Bicyclists

A SWFBUD member donated $2,000 to Tampa Police for more "Share the Road It's the Law" decals to be applied on Tampa Police cruisers' rear windows.

South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers (SWFBUD), the alliance of Tampa Bay retail bicycle stores and bicycle lawyers committed to growing bicycling in Tampa Bay, is proud to announce that SWFBUD member J. Steele Olmstead donated $2,000 to the Tampa Police Department for more Share the Road It's the Law decals to be placed on police cars' rear windows. Olmstead, a Tampa lawyer and bicyclist who has been a SWFBUD member for the past two years, presented his contribution to Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn during a check presentation ceremony in front of Tampa Police Department headquarters in downtown Tampa on Wednesday, April 25. Bicycle Group Lauds Light Legislation

A proposed law is aimed at encouraging bicyclists to install front and rear lights for night riding

A local bicycling group is praising legislation by State Rep. Janet Cruz as a good first step towards improving bike safety in Florida. The bill, currently pending in the Florida House of Representatives, would encourage bicyclists to install lights and reflectors. Under the bill, a bicyclist could avoid a fine for not having lights by later presenting a receipt showing lights had been installed. “We hope it's just the first step toward sweeping reform regarding bicycle safety in Florida, such as adopting a vulnerable users law that would increase the criminal penalties for motorists who kill or injure bicyclists and pedestrians,” said Alan Snel, director of the advocacy group South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers. Florida consistently…

Groups Work to Make Bike Safety Laws Tougher

March is Bike Month in Florida, where car vs. bike deaths are far more common than elsewhere.

As retired Rear Adm. LeRoy Collins Jr. rode his bike from his Davis Islands home to the University of Tampa last July, he was hit by a car and died from his injuries. Tampa Police investigated but weren’t able to prove that he was in the crosswalk at the time of the accident and the driver of the vehicle that struck Collins was never cited. “These horrific accidents happen and there are very few charges,” said Mike Lasché, founder of the Florida Bike Association. March is Bike Month in Florida, which has long led the nation in per capita bicyclist and pedestrian deaths. In the past year, about a dozen bicyclists in the Tampa Bay area have been killed. Biking advocates say local and state officials need to get serious about finding ways to …

Local Biking Club and Co-op Offer Alternatives to Riders

Bicyclists can have fun riding or even fixing their bikes in Seminole Heights.

Some Central Tampa biking enthusiasts are hard-core, but they don't have to be. Seminole Heights is a great place for folks who simply want to have fun while riding bikes. Since 2007, members of the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club have been getting together for casual bike rides around the neighborhood. The club has no dues or official members. It's an informal group of people who love bicycling. Organizer Alan Snel said there are plenty of hard-core cyclist groups in town, and he wanted to create an experience that was simply enjoyable for people. "That's really the future of growing bicycling in this country," he said. The group meets for bicycle rides on most Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m., but be sure to check the website for updates. …
