City Code Requirement Costs ACT Unplanned $110k

ACT is seeking $10 to offset the cost an air system.

The Animal Coalition of Tampa is thrilled about getting a brand-new address. After six years of caring for Tampa Bay’s community of pets and rescued feral cats at its vivid orange-painted location on Lemon Street, ACT has outgrown the small facility and is moving into a larger building just blocks away at 502 Gilchrist Street west of downtown Tampa. Yet the good news has an unexpected downside. Now that ACT is relocating and has committed to an expansive facility equipped to meet the needs of the pet community, they’ve learned that the air system in the pet holding rooms needs replacement. The extensive makeover needed to meet city code costs an unplanned $110,000. The vision of ACT began in 1995 when Linda Hamilton, its executive director…

ACT is an incredible organization and I hope that everyone takes part in their 10x10 Event. Within the article, air unit and air system were used to describe what was needed at the new facility, never air "conditioning" to alleviate any possible misunderstanding. I apologize that it still caused you confusion, Shawn.   more ›

Stride for Strays Aims to Help Homeless Pets

The 3k walk organized by the Animal Coalition of Tampa is Sunday, Oct. 23.

Put a leash on your four-legged friends and take part in the 11th annual Stride for Strays Walkathon Sunday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa. Organized by the Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT), the 3K walk strives to bring awareness and raise funds to help homeless animals by ending pet overpopulation in the city.  ACT is a strong advocate of spaying and neutering as a means to prevent the surrender and death of unwanted litters, and offers low affordable services at its clinic located at 1719 W Lemon St. “There are just not enough homes for all the animals that are born,” said ACT operation manager Terri Romano. “Our mission is to end the senseless killing in our local shelters by stopping …

Hillsborough County Temporarily Suspends Vouchers for Low Cost Pet Spay and Neuter Program

Existing vouchers will be honored, but new applications are not currently being accepted. Animal Coalition of Tampa fears the number of animals euthanized will increase.

Last year, 16,326 animals were put down in Hillsborough County shelters, according to Terri Romano, the operations manager for the Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT).  Although the figure is much lower than the 29,872 dogs and cats euthanized in 2005, folks at ACT feel more efforts need to be made to lower pet overpopulation.  “There are just not enough homes for all the animals that are born,” said Romano. “Our mission is to end the senseless killing in our local shelters by stopping unwanted births.”  The non-profit clinic is a strong advocate of spaying and neutering as a means to prevent the surrender and death of unwanted litters.  Since opening its doors at 1719 W. Lemon St. in 2006, the clinic has offered affordable services as well as…
