Mendenhall Elementary opened in 1949. The school was named after Aaron Mendenhall, who was elected one of the firstMore trustees of the Oak Grove School and served for 20 years. Mendenhall was also instrumental in organizing the first PTA in Hillsborough County.

The school was completed with only six classrooms. Air conditioning wasn't installed until the 1960s and was paid for by proceeds from a school candy sale.

The school colors are blue and white, and the school mascot is a tiger.

Approximately 81 percent of students receive free or reduced price lunches. The population is approximately 21 percent black, 56 percent Hispanic and 16 percent white.
