Seminole Heights residents should take note of the collection schedule from the City of Tampa.
The City of Tampa's solid waste collection schedule will be altered this weekend for Seminole Heights residents due to the Memorial Day weekend holiday. According to a news release from the City of Tampa, there will be no residential garbage, yard waste recycling or blue box recycling collection on Monday, May 27. Garbage will be collected on the next service day, which is Thursday, May 30. Yard waste collection and blue box recycling will resume on Monday, June 3. Commercial services scheduled for Monday service will resume on Tuesday, May 28, with normal collection schedules starting again on June 3. Attention, Seminole Heights parents: If you're planning to take advantage of this year's back-to-school sales tax holiday, here's an incentive: The state will now include some electronics as part of the deal, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Those include laptops, desktops, tablets, electronic book readers or tower computers, according to the Times. Purchases can't exceed $750, the Times said. More than 50 patients dressed up and took part in an Arabian Nights-themed prom.
Despite being hospitalized, more than 50 pediatric patients at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa were able to attend prom, thanks to child life specialists at the hospital. Dressed in evening gowns and tuxes, the patients took part in an Arabian Nights-themed prom at the hospital May 3 that included music, dancing, refreshments and keepsake photos. "For some seriously ill pediatric patients, this prom may have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Kelly Outlaw, child life supervisor at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “We think it’s a night that every child should have, no matter how sick, which is why we gave all of our patients a chance to go to prom now.” For more details and to see more photos, click here. Alina Diaz is desperate to find her beloved shih tzu, Meatball, who disappeared from her Seminole Heights home.
Alina Diaz, who works at her Seminole Heights home, let her two dogs out to sun themselves in her fenced-in backyard while she stepped inside for a phone meeting. Twenty minutes later, she opened the door to let her two shih tzus back in, but only Moxie was there. Meatball, a rescue dog, was gone. She seemed to disappear in plain sight. Since March 8, Alina Diaz has scoured her Seminole Heights neighborhood, posted flyers and even created a Facebook Page to "Bring Meatball Home." Still there is no sign of her dog. The tornado struck on Monday afternoon in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, Oklahoma.
One day after a 2-mile wide tornado sliced through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, killing dozens in its path, the American Red Cross is accepting donations for those affected by the tragedy. Mark your calendars, Seminole Heights margarita fans. The inaugural Tampa Bay Margarita Festival is headed to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. In addition to top shelf margaritas, attendees can expect a fireworks show, beach volleyball and the sounds of four local bands. Admission is $15. Margaritas range in price from $6 to $8. A portion of proceeds benefits a University of South Florida nonprofit called Students in Free Enterprise, said Monica Varner, who is helping organize the festival. "XFC Collision Course" will be at the USF Sun Dome on June 14.
On June 14, "XFC: Collision Course" is headed to the USF Sun Dome. Tickets for the mixed martial arts show are on sale for a price range of $18 to $100, according to a news release from Global Spectrum, who managest the Sun Dome. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-745-3000 or going to the Sun Dome Box office. XFC is the largest pro mixed martial arts promotion in the East Coast, according to the release. Forget the shot of espresso. A woman having coffee at Starbucks in Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg this past weekend was shot in the calf when her friend's gun discharged from inside her purse. According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, 38-year-old Amiee Peterson of Pinellas Park did not even realize that she had been shot until she saw blood oozing from her leg. Her friend, 51-year-old Pamela Back, also of Pinellas Park, told police that she kept the gun in her purse, but had never taken it out or cleaned it, since her father had given her the .25 caliber firearm. Two men are charged with stealing used cooking and fryer grease from a Wendy's in Sarasota and may be responsible for similar crimes in Pinellas County, authorities …
