The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
4801 E. Fowler Ave.
Tampa, FL 33617
If you like butterflies, high-wire bikes, and knowing how things work, the Museum of Science and Industry has several slots for enthusiastic and curious volunteers.
With three floors of interactive exhibits, MOSI is the largest science center in the South. It also houses a planetarium and the state’s only IMAX Dome Theatre.
Volunteers enhance the museum’s experience by providing demonstrations and in-depth information.
For instance, volunteers are needed in the Bioworks/Butterfly Garden from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday to share facts about this living exhibit and help with caring for the plants and butterflies.
Other volunteer opportunities at MOSI include:
*InterActors - These helpers teach guests the science behind hands-on exhibits such as the high-wire bike, the Gulf Coast Hurricane Machine, and the Earthquake Simulator. Must be age 14 or older.
*Museum Way-Finders - These guides roam the museum in search of guests with “directional dilemmas.” Suggested commitment: five hours a week for at least one month. Must be age 18 or older and complete a background check.
*Demonstrators - These volunteers demonstrate science concepts during all operating hours using specially designed teaching tools and encourage visitor participation.
*Education Department Assistants - These aides act as teachers’ assistants in educational programs during the week or on weekends, or serve as group greeters on weekdays from 9am to 1pm.
The MOSI staff also needs clerical help with typing, filing, data entry and other office duties.
