Patch Picks: 5 Great Non Profits Making a Difference

Looking for a great organization to lend a hand to? Patch has selected five local charities you can volunteer with to make a difference.

Seminole Heights Patch runs a weekly feature called Patch Picks, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off, and more. Some of these are in our coverage area, and some are nearby.

You’ll find useful lists to help you, your family, friends, and significant others find the best places for everything from Sunday brunch to New Year’s Eve celebrations, pumpkin patches, date night destinations, florists, girlfriend nights out, kids party places, parks and more.

This week's Patch Picks: Five Non Profits Making a Difference

  1. Feeding America Tampa Bay “The Food Bank is a behind-the-scenes resource supporting hundreds of charitable programs that feed the hungry.” That’s how the group describes itself on its web site. It operates a 50,000-square-foot warehouse in Tampa and is always looking for individuals or groups who can help sort and pack donations. It was formerly known as America’s Second Harvest of Tampa Bay. Visit  http://feedingamericatampabay.org or call 813-254.1190.
  2. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay
The Humane Society offers food, shelter, medical care and spay and neutering services to thousands of animals each year. Take a dog for a walk, play with a kitten or help clean out a shelter. But they have some requirements: you must be 16 or older, volunteer at least 30 hours over the next six months and you must attend an orientation. Visit http://humanesocietytampa.org or call 813-876-7138.
  3. Meals on Wheels of Tampa
The group delivers 550 meals a week along 55 different routes. Volunteers pick up meals at one of 13 community sites and deliver the hot food daily Monday through Fridays. Weekend meals are delivered frozen on Fridays. Once the food is dropped volunteers return coolers and heat backs back to the pick-up site. Volunteers can deliver as often as several times a week or only twice a month. You must be 18, have a valid license and insurance and agree to a background screening. Visit http://humanesocietytampa.org or call 813-238-8410.
  4. Habitat for Humanity
This group has gotten technically savvy. The web site specifically lists the skills and materials the group needs at any given time, from carpentry or plumbing experience to items like wallboard. Apple users can even sign up on the web site.  And while experience is appreciated, none is required. Visit http://www.habitathillsborough.com or call 813-239-2242.
  5. Metropolitan Ministries
This is a mainstay of Tampa Bay non-profits. For 38 years the group has coordinated with churches, civic groups, individuals and businesses to feed and house the homeless. Visit at http://www.metromi.org or call 813-209-1000.
