Metropolitan Ministries Gets Helping Hand from Local Teens

The teens are working at the nonprofit for four weeks this summer, officials say.

Throughout the year, Metropolitan Ministries serves low-income and homeless families in and around communities like Seminole Heights.

When summer comes, local teenagers are given the chance to give back, too.

For about four weeks, the group - with an average age of 15 - are responsible for kitchen detail, organizing clothing and food warehouses, office duties and working with the public.

Groups the teens represent include Lee United Methodist Church, Generations Church, Central United Methodist Church Youth from Monroe, N.C., Crossroads United Methodist Church, Urban Immersion and Van Dyke United Methodist Church.

“Some of these young people have personal stories of  overcoming adversity," said Metropolitan Ministries Volunteer Services Manager Christina Mitchell, "and yet we see adults today who used to volunteer with us years ago and are now supporters of our mission.”

What do you think about the work the teens are doing? Tell us in the comments.
