Tiger Athletes are Key Players

Middleton High School athletes are doing well on the track and on the diamond.

Female Athlete of the week: Shaniqua Hill

Shaniqua Hill is a strong competitor in the 100 and 3o0 meter hurdles. She ranked 30th overall at largest meet of the year, the Steinbrenner Invitational at USF, in the 100 meter hurdles running a 18.80 in the prelims where she finished second.

That time was two seconds longer than her usual 100 meter hurdle time (around 16 seconds) due to a fall after hitting a hurdle. Last week, she competed again at the Manuel Griffin Relays at Hillsborough where Middleton's girls finished 22nd as a team. In all, Hill runs five events, her favorite being the 300 meter hurdles.

"I've had a good year so far," Hill said. "I've run some good times and I'm happy with the way things are going."

Male Athlete of the week: Dexture McCall

Leading the Tigers in hitting this season, McCall has been one of the biggest contributors to Middleton's 8-4 record this season.

Luckily for coach Vernon Slater, McCall is one of the three starters he will retain for next season. He is currently hitting .541 and leads the team with 11 RBI on 20 hits.

"He's tearing the cover off the ball this season," Slater said. "I've been real happy with him. He transferred from Freedom and he wasn't enjoying it as much over there. I think the difference has just been the way we challenge him to play over here."
