Lady Terriers Capture Victory

Leto traveled to Hillsborough on Tuesday for a showdown on the diamond.

The Hillsborough High School softball team won for the second time this season with an 8-2 win over Leto while the baseball team fell by a score of 15-5 to the Falcons.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Terriers got their bats going behind a solid performance from pitcher Ashley Avary who picked up her first win of the season. It was Avary's second consecutive start and a game that served as a confidence booster for both the pitcher and the players behind her.

"Ashley did really well tonight," coach Kristina Ravenal of her junior pitcher. "She kept her composure and kept battling. This was a big win for the confidence of the whole team because we hit well and didn't make mistakes in the field. If they know they can hit the ball, then they will."

Though it is only Hillsborough's second win of the season, Ravenal is optimistic about the effect this victory could have on her team as they approach a difficult week ahead.

"Hopefully this is something that we can carry into next week when we play Freedom and Chamberlain," Ravenal said. "I feel like those are two big schools we can beat, but we have to play better than we did in our previous meetings with them. If we can keep the bats going like tonight then we can keep the momentum going. I think we're going to put a string of wins together."

BASEBALL

The Hillsborough baseball team struggled defensively, committing six errors that contributed to the Terriers allowing 15 runs.

Pitcher Devin Lee got the start giving up nine runs in four innings of work, although most of the runs he allowed were unearned.

"Our starting pitcher tonight gets them to hit a ton of ground balls and we couldn't handle it," coach Kenny White said. "They had a dozen balls that didn't leave the infield where guys ended up on base. If you let them have a ton of base runners, then you put yourself in bad situations. That's what we did tonight."

The second inning proved to the Terriers unraveling as Leto put four runs on the board to make the score 5-0. At the plate, Hillsborough was quiet, managing only three hits all night.

"Feel free to find our bats for us," White said. "We're not managing our at bats well. We have a lot of inexperienced players on this team and right now we're not getting it done, especially at the plate. We've tried a lot of different things in practice but right now we're back to the drawing board.

"It's still early in the year, but we can't keep saying that for very long."
