Hello and Happy Cinco de Mayo

Hello and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

By way of saying hello to the readers of SeminoleHeights.Patch.com, let me tell you about the significance of Cinco de Mayo to me. This is a blog, after all, and while the subjects I choose to write on may swing widely between my interests, this particular one ties many of them together and tomorrow, as it happens, is the fifth of May.

Cinco de Mayo took on greater meaning in my life when we moved to Tampa and by happenstance got the key to our old home in Seminole Heights that very morning. Eleven years ago, we joined this community. Each year we mark it with friends and celebrate the strong sense of interconnection that makes this neighborhood great.

My key to getting involved and networking within my neighborhood is goofy stuff like pot lucks, parties, and just walking my dog down the street.  I think people underestimate the power of simple, honest connections like these. One week you're a group of people sharing a pasta dish and the next you're forming a neighborhood watch and reducing street crime. The folks that can get out there week after week and work to improve their community are motivated by those personal connections. Maybe it is something we put in the casserole?
