Summer Camp Spotlight

In its 15th year, Camp IDS offers more than 60 fun camp options for preschoolers to high school students.

Children from all over the Bay area have gathered on the Independent Day School-Corbett Campus for the past 14 years for summer fun. As camp staffers gear up for summer No. 15, they have plans to make this the best one yet.

And with more than 60 full and half-day camp options, there is something to engage a wide variety of interests for preschoolers through high school seniors.

“What’s been great about Camp IDS is that the children can choose what they really want to do. The wide selection of camps exposes children to new things that they might not normally know much about, and offers them an opportunity to expand their interests in a positive and supportive environment, ” IDS teacher and camp co-director Stephen Shoe said in a press release.

Looking for a way to burn some of that endless energy? IDS sports camps include soccer, volleyball, archery and disc golf. A “Wilderness Extreme” camp for fifth- through eighth-graders includes hiking, mountain biking, snorkeling, canoeing and inline skating.

For budding artists, there's fine arts camps in drama, dance, painting and digital photography. Special interest camps such as model rocketry, filmography and newspaper reporting also are popular options.

“Campers can gain new knowledge about great literature in the morning and become a LEGO engineer in the afternoon. They can dabble in new painting mediums, sing on stage, or bake a dessert every day to bring home,” said camp co-director Garret Jagdman in a press release.

Many of the camp counselors are IDS teachers. Others are specially trained by IDS Headmaster Joyce Burick Swarzman -- a point of pride for the program, a school official said.

Seven weekly sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 13 to July 29. For parents looking for flexibility, free morning care is available to campers beginning at 7:15 a.m. After-camp care also is available for a fee.

Bus transportation is available to and from the IDS campus, as well. Call 813-961-3087 for routes and prices.

A full listing of camps and a registration can be found in the camp brochure.
