Seminole Heights Schools Fall Victim to Grading Standards Change

Seminole Heights schools were not immune to letter grade drops after the state made changes to its accountability system.

Public school grades for 2012 have been released for Hillsborough County at the elementary and middle school level with some Seminole Heights schools feeling the projected hit of raised academic standards by the state. 

were issued to parents to expect a drop in the school's grade to reflect the heightened standards and in Seminole Heights, seven schools saw their grade drop from 2011.

“As grades for elementary, middle and many combination schools become available you may notice that some schools have lower grades than last year,” Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson wrote in an open letter to parents. “That does not necessarily mean that the schools, teachers or students are not doing as well as they were before. There were a number of changes to the state’s accountability system this year that impacted the results.”

Broward Elementary was the only Seminole Heights school to improve its grade from last year and only one of thirteen county wide. Cleveland and Lee elementary schools maintained their grade, but all three middle schools dropped at least one letter grade.

School grades are based on a number of factors, including FCAT scores and end-of-year assessments. State officials had warned parents throughout Florida that they might see a number of schools drop in letter grades due to new standards.

High school grades will not be released until later this year.
