Lockhart Elementary Students Become Experts at Conserving Water

Fourth-graders at Lockhart Elementary Magnet School are teaching their families and school faculty how to conserve.

Submitted by the City of Tampa Water Department:

The City of Tampa Water Department and Lockhart Elementary Magnet School's 4th grade students are helping Lockhart's student families, faculty and staff save water — one consultation at a time. Student "water efficiency consultants" met with "clients" late last month to help them calculate their water use and to set personalized efficiency goals.

"This a great example of what a small group of engaged people can do to help protect our water resources for today and for the future," said Brad Baird, Tampa Water Department Director.  "The students, the teachers and everyone who came in for a consultation are to be applauded for taking action to make a difference."

The student's water consultation project was designed to prepare students to connect their water-related studies in the classroom with real-world experience. Lockhart's 4th grade students studied water resources and water conservation at a global, national, regional and local level and then applied their knowledge to help project participants save water.

The project is featured as part of Spotlight Tampa, airing on City of Tampa Television in June: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 a.m., Sundays at
4:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Monday through Friday at 10 p.m. City of Tampa Television is Channel 15 on the Verizon FiOS system and Channel 615 on Bright House Networks. Programs are also available by live or on demand webcast online at www.tampagov.net/CTTV.
