Lady Chiefs Stay Perfect

With a 9-2 victory the Lady Chiefs improve to 8-0 on the season, while the Chamberlain baseball team is still searching for its first victory.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Chiefs bats went to work Tuesday night, picking up 9 runs on 14 hits on route to Chamberlain High School’s 9-2 victory over the Freedom Patriots.

Junior outfielder Jennie Cook started things off on the right foot, hitting a three-run home run in the first inning.

“I just shortened my stroke and stepped into it.”

Sophomore Rachel Dwyer led the way for the Lady Chiefs defensively, pitching a complete game and striking out nine.

Chamberlain head coach Bob Diez felt the team was more focused than Friday night when they barely survived a late scare to hold off Gaither.

Junior Biaka Bell went a 4-for-4 with four singles while hitting as the designated player. Bell was resting her knee after hurting it sliding into a base last week at Sickles.

Junior Madison Gonzalez hit Chamberlains other home run on the evening, a solo shot in the second inning.

With the victory they remain undefeated, improving to 8-0.

However, coach Diez has higher expectations than just winning games in March. Last season the Lady Cheifs were 13-2, but lost in the first game of districts.

“Around here winning games is a big deal,” he said, trying not to downplay the importance of getting the job done during the regular season. “But we want to win championships. We want to be district champs. We want to regional champs. That’s what we shoot for.”

BASEBALL

Trailing to Freedom 10-2 in the fifth inning, the Chamberlain baseball team rallied, scoring four runs, loading the bases, and bringing the tying run to bat. And for a brief moment it looked as if the Chiefs were fighting their way back into the game.

But the rally was cut short, the Chiefs pitching staff struggled, and they once again fell short of that elusive first victory, losing 14-6.

“We just didn’t have the pitching today,” said Chamberlain head coach Bob Ooley.

“We are just not playing good baseball, and the results are another loss.”

Coach Ooley suspects that leadership is a problem for the young team, a role that he feels the few upper-classmen on the roster need to step into.

At practice, preparing for their next match-up, and still hunting for that first “W”, it’ll be back to the basics for the Chiefs.

“We are working on all aspects of the game right now," he said.

The teams will both be back at it Friday night when they hit the road for games at Kings High School.
