Lady Chiefs Face Stiff Competition

Chamberlain High School's undefeated softball team will test their mettle against some of the top teams in the state at the Palm Harbor University tournament.

The girls of the undefeated Chamberlain High School softball team are heading to Clearwater today, but it is far from an out-of-town vacation.

On the fields of Palm Harbor University High School, they’ll be competing in a tournament with some of the best softball teams the state has to offer.

“This is going to tell us a lot,” said Coach Bob Diez. “Like I told them, I’m expecting to go there to win. I’m not expecting to visit Clearwater.”

For the Lady Chiefs, sitting atop 5A District 9 with a perfect 10-0 record in league play, Eddie C. Moore Complex will be proving grounds. It will provide the chance to test their mettle against the likes of East Lake, ranked by eighth in the nation by MaxPreps, and River Ridge, ranked 19th.

“If we play to our full potential, which we haven't been doing lately, then we'll be fine,” said junior outfielder Jennie Cook. “I'm excited to see how we do."

“We really have to step up and play our game,” agreed sophomore pitcher Rachel Dwyer. “We aren’t going to be able to just get by. We are going to have to play our best.”

The Lady Chiefs take to the diamond tonight at 6 pm in their first match-up of the tournament. They’ll face the Seminole Warhawks (9-5). If they advance, they’ll face the winner of the Bloomingdale-River Ridge in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 10 am.

The semi-finals are scheduled for 2 pm, and the championship at 6 pm.

“We’ll find out if we can play, and play two, three, four games,” said Coach Diez. “That is what you need to do to win a state championship."
