Hillsborough High Teacher Nominated for Top Award

Officials surprised Yolanda Whitehead Driskell in the classroom with the news: she's in the running for Teacher of the Year

"Surprise Patrols" from the Hillsorough Education Foundation fanned out to schools across Hillsborough County Friday morning to spring the news to 15 educators that they've made the finalist round for the 2012 Excellence in Education Awards.

Hillsborough High School's Yolanda Whitehead Driskell got her surprise news at 8 a.m. in her classroom as students and faculty looked on: she's in the running for Teacher of the Year.

The other four finalists for Teacher of the Year are Christine Danger of Robles Elementary, Sue Creekmore of Kingswood Elementary, Katy Cortelyou of Kenly Elementary, Elisabeth Denisar Babin of Dowdell Middle School.

There are also five finalists each in the for Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year, and Instructional Support Employee of the Year.

Nominees were submitted from over 200 Hillsborough County schools, creating a field of 681 contestants. The 15 finalists have been selected by their peers, and will be honored along with all the nominees at a Feb. 16 awards ceremony at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

The award's sponsors include Amscot Financial, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union’s Suncoast for Kids Foundation, Caspers Company McDonald's Restaurants, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
