Bob Gilbertson Central City Y Announces Emma L. Kilpatrick College Scholarship

Applications for the $2,500 scholarship are due May 11.

Local high school seniors are invited to apply for the $2,500 Emma L. Kilpatrick Scholarship through the Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA. The scholarship helps deserving African American high school graduates obtain additional educational and training experiences in either traditional or technical colleges by providing $1,250 per semester.

Kilpatrick, a Tampa mother of six who passed away in 1988 at the age of 63, promoted the importance of education for the betterment of others. She encouraged young people to get an education, even though her own was limited, because she believed education was the road to endless possibilities.

Applicants must be high school seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 through the fall semester of their senior year. They must also complete a 300-word essay explaining their educational goals and why they feel they should receive this award. Additionally, all applicants must provide documentation of 10 hours of completed community service. The finalist will be required to interview with the scholarship selection panel in late May.
