Harmful Bacteria Found at Davis Island Beach

A recent test of the water found harmful bacteria that indicates fecal pollution, the Hillsborough County Health Department reports.

A health advisory has been issued for swimmers at Davis Island Beach after a recent test found harmful bacteria, the Hillsborough County Health Department reports.

The advisory was also issued for the Ben T. Davis South beach after samples taken Monday were found to contain higher levels of enterococci bacteria than recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The bacteria, which normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals, may cause human disease, infections or rashes, the Health Department said in a media release. Their presence is "an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage," according to the release.
