New Name For Nebraska Avenue? City Takes Up Issue

Changing the name of a main road in Seminole Heights has lots of ramifications.

Tampa City Council member Yvonne Yolie Capin has sparked quite a conversation with her most recent proposal.

You see, Capin wants to rename Nebraska Avenue in honor Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, according to TBO.com. Avilés was "a 16th-century colonial governor known for the brutal murder of French protestants in St. Augustine," according to the article.

Besides the controversy of the possible name, many small businesses would need to make changes. Any business on Nebraska Avenue would need to update their address on any printed or online material. Plus, businesses along the street using Nebraska in part of their business name would suddenly have another issue to content with, a name referencing a street that no longer exists.

It could also cost the city $75,000 to replace signage in the area, according to Tampabay.com

What do you think of renaming Nebraska Avenue?
