Come Election Day, you can count on having to decipher a very long ballot. In addition to national, state and local candidates, this year’s ballot also includes a number of proposed amendments to the Florida Constitution.
To help speed up the process at the polls, Seminole Heights Patch has created a guide on each of the amendments. Let’s take a look at Amendment 5 and what a yes vote on it means at the polls.
Amendment 5: State Courts
This amendment would require that Supreme Court justices appointed by the Governor also be confirmed by the Senate. It also enables the court to repeal a rule through a simple majority instead of requiring the two-thirds majority vote that is now in place. In addition, it would give the Florida House of Representatives the ability to review all files of the Judicial Qualifications Commission.
Opponents, including the League of Women Voters of Florida, say the amendment would weaken the state’s judiciary in favor of the legislative branch while taking away powers from the Governor.
Supporters say the measure would add more accountability and efficiency in the court system.
