22nd Street Enhancement Project to Aid Pedestrians, Roadway

From City of Tampa officials:

Mayor Bob Buckhorn and community leaders will cut the ribbon on the completed 22nd Street Enhancement Project on Wednesday, September 4. The event will be at 10 a.m. near the 22nd Street roundabout in East Tampa, between N. 21st Street and N. 22nd Street, which is anticipated to open to thru traffic after the event.

“Projects like this are more than new infrastructure and better landscaping; it’s about generating economic opportunity, creating complete streets that serve everyone, and transforming a community,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “22nd Street is now a gateway for all of East Tampa, welcoming visitors, businesses, and residents alike into a great community.”

The 22nd Street Enhancement Project provides for pedestrian, streetscape and roadway improvements to 22nd Street from Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard south to E. 21st Avenue. The traffic flow along 22nd street will be improved because of the added roundabout, upgraded traffic signals, and construction of bus stops with pullouts.

Other enhancements along the 22nd Street corridor include landscaping, irrigation, enhanced crosswalks, increased sidewalks, a 10-foot multi-modal trail on the west side, improved bus stops and shelters, and pedestrian lighting.  While construction was occurring, aging water and wastewater lines were replaced and upgraded.
