Update: West Sligh Traffic Reopens After Traffic Fatality

Tampa Police are investigating the accident, in which a 22-year-old Tampa man's vehicle left the road and hit a retaining wall. He was found dead at the scene.

Updated, 12:18 p.m.:

West Sligh Avenue has reopened to traffic following an early morning traffic fatality, Tampa Police said Thursday.

Nasdiel Viera-Curbelo, 22, of Tampa, was driving east on Sligh around 6 a.m. when his vehicle left the road and hit a retaining wall at 304 W. Sligh Ave., police spokesperson Andrea Davis said in a media release. Responders found him already dead when they arrived at the scene, Davis said.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses to determine the cause of the crash.

"The initial investigation does indicate that speed was a factor," David said.

Tampa Police are investigating a traffic fatality that has shut down a portion of West Sligh Avenue near the Lowry Park Zoo.

The fatality occurred in the 300 block of West Sligh, police spokesperson Andrea Davis said Thursday morning. The street is shut down between Florida Avenue and North Boulevard, near the zoo.

No further information was available.
