Teen Dies After Birthday Party Shooting

Tampa Police say a fight broke out among men at the party and shots were fired.

A 17-year-old Tampa youth died at Tampa General Hospital late Saturday after a shooting at a birthday party , Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said in a news release.

A crowd of about 60 people were inside Unique Island Grill at 3404 E. Lake Ave. for a birthday party when several men started fighting at 11:45 p.m., McElroy said. The men were asked to leave and the fight started again outside. Someone fired several gunshots.

Police have identified the victim as John Singleton of 1507 E. Ellicott St. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

"Detectives are still working to determine if the victim was attending the party and the reason for the fights," McElroy said.

A description of the suspect has not yet been released.
