Tampa Police K-9 Sniffs Out a Bust

The springer spaniel makes her living finding narcotics in South Tampa and Seminole Heights.

Bad guys on the prowl within the Tampa city limits might want to take notice. K-9 Bailey is on the job.

Bailey, a springer spaniel, is credited with helping the Tampa Police Department take 54 grams of marijuana off the streets Tuesday. She's regularly on the beat throughout District 1, which encompasses South Tampa and Seminole Heights.

Here are the details of Bailey's latest bust:

According to an incident report, a police officer made a traffic stop in the Port Tampa area around 6:40 p.m. June 12. When she put on her lights, the driver and passenger of the 2001 Chevy Impala got out of the car and tried to go into a home in the 7300 block of South Westshore Boulevard.

When neither suspect complied with the officer’s requests, backup was called in. That backup was K-9 Officer Bridgett Coyman and her partner, Bailey.

Bailey was able to sniff out 9 grams of marijuana on the driver, Eric Boderick. She then found another 45 grams of marijuana inside the car, along with paraphernalia, the report said.

Boderick, 26, of 7410 S. Morton St., and his passenger, Damarcus Oliver, 28, of 7301 S. Westshore Blvd., were charged with resisting arrest without violence, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of paraphernalia.

Bailey and Coyman work throughout District 1. Their work was featured on the Tampa Police Department's Facebook page Wednesday.

When are they ever going to stop wasting public resources "sniffing out" marijuana? Billions of dollars are wasted every year that could be put to better use. Let's face it, the drug "war" is a lost cause. Legalize it and it will be like post-prohibition, the violence and madness will stop. Look at The Netherlands, it's been legal there for decades. Most Dutch kids don't bother with it and there isn't a fraction of the drug crime and violence we have here.

I agree with Karen, sniff out the cocaine and smack and leave the pot alone.
