Student Brings Loaded Gun to Middleton High

A 10th grader who brought a loaded gun to Middleton High School today is facing a felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds, police say.
Here's what police say happened at the school, 4801 N. 22nd Street in Tampa:
On Tuesday, the 16-year-old brought the loaded gun to school, saying he needed it for protection in his neighborhood. He showed the weapon to classmate, and the classmate texted his father.
The classmate's father then called the school, who informed the school resource officer of the situation.
The SRO pulled the student from the classroom and found the gun in his bookbag. The student said he found the gun, but detectives are looking into that claim.
The boy was taken to the juvenile assessment center.
