Man Shot by Tampa Police

The shooting occurred near North Tampania Avenue and West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The St. Petersburg Times has reported that a man shot by Tampa Police on Tuesday morning, Umberto Ferrara, 74, was apparently suicidal, had already shot himself once and was aiming at police when an officer fired.

The incident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at 4414 N. Tampania Ave. near the intersection of at West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Ferrera's family told police that he has been depressed and a neighbor said he has cancer, according to another account of the shooting posted on 10 News. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition.

A Tampa Police officer shot someone Tuesday morning near the intersection of North Tampania Avenue and West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to a news release by police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Details about the shooting have not been released.

The suspect was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, McElroy said. No officers were injured in the incident.
