A 23-year-old medical assistant from Port Charlotte faces criminal charges after police say she burned her kids with a stick.

Kayla R. Oxenham’s children, ages 5 and 7, told police their mother lit a stick on fire and then proceeded to burn them. The children also told officers Oxenham said she did it to be able to identify them as hers and so they could get ice cream, NBC News is reporting.

Charlotte County Jail records indicate Oxenham was arrested June 17 and was later released on $15,000 bond. She faces neglect without great bodily harm charges.
