Chamberlain High Mobilizes to Support Students After Teen's Death

A 15-year-old Chamberlain student was found dead Thursday afternoon.

Chamberlain High School students started their morning with some tough news.

Principal Thomas Morrill had to tell the student body that their classmate, 15-year-old Casey May, died Thursday afternoon.

“It’s a tough day at Chamberlain today,” said Stephen P. Hegarty, spokesman for the Hillsborough County School District. “(The) principal made an announcement this morning letting students know there had been a tragedy.”

Hegarty said counseling support was being provided to both students and faculty members as news of May’s death rocked the campus.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, May was discovered around 3 p.m. March 22 in the bathroom of her home on Waterside Court in Tampa. Her grandmother found her.

Debbie Carter, sheriff’s office spokeswoman, called the death a possible suicide.

“At this time, preliminary indications are that May was upset over a relationship that she was involved in that had recently ended,” Carter wrote in a media release.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death. Few details are available at this time.

In the meantime, Morrill is spending his day reaching out to students and faculty at Chamberlain, Hegarty said.

“The principal is out on campus making sure everything is OK,” he said.
