American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Seminole Heights

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Seminole Heights will be hosting the 2nd annual event on April 1st and 2nd at Hillsborough High School Track beginning at 5:30pm and lasting until 10:30am on Saturday. “Relay For Life gives Seminole Heights a unique opportunity to contribute to the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives, by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” said Lauren McQueen, Community Representative for the American Cancer Society. “Residents who give their time, energy and financial commitment to this exciting event are really standing up for their community and its pledge to join the fight.” Seminole Heights has truly shown their commitment to the cause with over 400 people participating this past year.

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals form teams and camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. Relay celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and provides participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

90% of all funds generated locally will be returned to Hillsborough County for cancer related services and research with a mission of eliminating cancer as a major health concern. By 2015, the Society aims to prevent close to five million additional deaths from cancer, avoid six million new cancer diagnoses, and measurably improve the quality of life for those who have cancer. Residents are encouraged to attend what is sure to be annual event in our community.
