Tropical Storm Debby has officially formed, forecasters with the National Weather Service said Saturday afternoon, and a rainy weekend should continue for the Tampa Bay area.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Louisiana coast as Debby slowly drifts north and then west west from the center of the Gulf of Mexico. The strengthening storm is expected to bring "widespread showers with a few embedded thunderstorms" across the west coast of Florida through Monday, forecasters said.
A high surf advisory was in effect for the Tampa Bay area's beaches until 8 p.m. Sunday, and a coastal flood advisory was issued for Hillsborough and Pinellas counties through 8 p.m. Monday. Forecasts warned of an increased risk of rip currents and building seas and surf along the coast.
Bay area residents can expect heavier rainfall Sunday and Monday, according to Bay News 9 meteorologist Diane Kacmarik. That weather pattern could even continue through Tuesday, Kacmarik reports, though the forecast depends on Debby's track in the Gulf.
