Tampa Electric Offers Rebates for New Solar Installations

The company will offer $1.5 million in rebates each year for five years to encourage the installation of solar water heater and photovoltaic systems.

Tampa Electric will pay rebates to customers who install new solar water heating systems and/or new PV systems at their homes or businesses, according to a news release. The company will accept reservations online at tampaelectric.com/renewable beginning today. The availability of the rebates is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Existing systems will not qualify for the rebate.

The new solar rebate programs – submitted as part of the company’s energy conservation program filing and approved by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) include:

  • Residential Solar Water Heating – Provides customer rebates up to $1,000 for installing new solar water heating systems.
  • Solar PV Systems – Provides residential and business customer rebates of $2 per watt (up to a maximum of $20,000) when PV systems are installed and interconnected to Tampa Electric’s grid.

Tampa Electric will connect the solar systems to the company’s electric grid with net metering, where the company provides a retail credit to a customer for excess electricity generated by their PV system. To date, the company has 133 solar customers interconnected with net metering, resulting in a combined capacity of almost 1,300 kilowatts.
