Pet Owners, Beware: Summer Heat is Harsh on Animals, Too

Learn a few summer safety tips from Hillsborough County Animal Services.

With temperature climbing beyond 90 degrees already, humans aren't the only one's sweltering in the pre-summer heat.

Pets can suffer heat stroke, even in the shade, according to Hillsborough County Animal Services. And dogs are more at risk because of their activity level.

To keep heat stroke at bay, here are a few tips from the folks at Animal Services:

  • Keep shade and fresh water available at all times
  • Be cautious when exercising dogs - even when temperatures aren't at their peak
  • Try to limit outdoor exposure of older pets, heavy-coated breeds, dogs with pushed-in noses, such as bulldogs or pugs
  • Talk to pet sitters and boarding facilities about exercise procedures

If your pet starts suffering from heat stroke, immediate first aid is required.

  • Lower their body temperature by placing them in cool water or running a hose over their body
  • Cool the neck and head areas first
  • Place your pet in an air-conditioned area
  • Seek medical attention

Finally, remember that state law says that animals are not allowed to be left inside vehicles - even with windows cracked. When its 85 degrees outside, the inside of a vehicle can reach 102 degrees in about 10 minutes, according to Animal Services.

Anyone who sees animal cruelty or spots a pet confined inside a vehicle should call law enforcement or Hillsborough County Animal Services immediately.
